"Do not be wise in your own eyes ..."
Humility. Which is hard even for the best of us!
Remember that old song by Mac Davis? "Lord, it's hard to be humble ... when you are perfect in every way." Sigh. Funny song - but sad truth.
"Fear the Lord and shun evil ..."
Jesus said that we cannot serve 2 masters ... be they the Lord and money, or the Lord and evil, or the Lord and our selves. We must choose this day whom we will serve (Joshua 24:15). And because we live in such a fallen world - the choice of who we will serve is more than not a moment by moment, situation by situation, life style.
"Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops ..."
I have wondered sometimes - what about when you have no wealth? Or you do not raise crops?
How do I keep this Word true in my own heart and life?
Honoring the Lord with whatever I DO have. Immediately. Not waiting to give Him honor and place. Not waiting to surrender all to Him.
And the benefits?
..."This will bring health to your body ..."
..."And nourishment to your bones ..."
..."Then your barns will be filled to overflowing ..."
..."and your vats will brim over with new wine."
And the most precious benefit of all?
More of the Presence of God in our lives!
"My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart ... "
"Let love and faithfulness never leave you ..."
For they will ...
*Prolong your life many years.
*Bring you prosperity.
*You will win favor.
*You will have a good name in the sight of God and man.
What more could we ask for???
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Trust -- reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety of someone
-- confident expectation of something
All -- the whole of
Lean -- to incline or bend
-- to rest against something for support
-- to depend on or rely on
Acknowledge -- to admit to be real or true
-- to show or express appreciation or gratitude for
-- to recognize the authority of
Lord, I am learnING to lean on you. LearnING to trust in you. Thank you for your patience and longsuffering with me, your child. Just always remember that I am a CHILD. Let your love surround me, rest upon me. Hold me close to your heart and love me.
O Abba Father!
I love you!
IF ... what a big word! Even in the Word of God - IF is a big word ...
"IF you accept my words ... and store up my commands within you ... turning your ear to wisdom ... applying your heart to understanding ..."
"IF you call out for insight ... cry aloud for understanding ... "
"IF you look for it as for silver ... search for it as for hidden treasure ..."
"THEN ... you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God."
Wow! To understand the fear of the Lord (which is the beginning of all wisdom) and to find the knowledge of God! Isn't that worth everything??? It ought to be!
And this is not a "maybe - so" ... it is a "THEN" promise!
"For the Lord gives wisdom ... from his mouth come knowledge and understanding."
"He holds victory in store for the upright ... he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones."
I know it is hard to trust in the Lord - not because He has ever done anything to cause it to be hard - but as humans we want to see and hear and touch and feel what we trust in. And God doesn't have skin on for us to do that with. But that is where FAITH comes in. We believe even tho we don't see and hear and touch and feel. Lord, help us! You are worth it ... help us to keep our eyes on the "prize" and not get so wrapped up in the cares of this world.
And another "THEN" ... "THEN you will understand what is right and just and fair - every good path." Would that not make this life easier??? Goodness yes!
"For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you ..."
Isn't that what we all need? And what we all want?
"Thus you will walk in the ways of good men and keep to the paths of the righteous. For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it ..."
What a promise to hang on to in those midnight hours of darkness!
O Lord help me hang on.
vv. 20 - 33 ...
"Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares;"
We really don't have to go that far to hear the voice of reason and wisdom. We just have to LISTEN.
"If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you."
It is hard to accept a rebuke. No one likes to be rebuked. But when it is wisdom ... LISTEN. OBEY.
If for no other reason to LISTEN and to OBEY ...
v. 33 ... "but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
What a promise! What a reason to LISTEN and to OBEY!!! Especially in our world today.
O Lord God - help me to LISTEN and to OBEY.
vv 8 - 19 ...
"Listen ... to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching."
To me, this is more than just an instruction to children to listen and to obey. It is a charge of commitment to a father and a mother to instruct and to teach - right and good - the ways of the Lord.
There are so many people and things of this world to entice us away from the ways of the Lord.
And these people and things do not always look "evil" and "wicked".
If they came to us with forked tails, stinky breath, and the look of death upon them - how easy it would be to "not go along with them, ... not set foot on their paths".
But, they come to us looking nice and good and appealing.
Be it a job ... a house ... a "friend" ... something to enjoy - food or drink or possession ...
But only after we have "give in to them" do they suck us down into that pit of darkness and destruction.
We need to be praying for wisdom and discernment.
We need to be reading and learning the Word of God.
I heard a long time ago that bank tellers are never shown a counterfeit bill while they are being trained for work. They are only shown the real money.
So that once they become so familiar with the real money, the counterfeit will be easy to spot.
Oh that we would become so familiar with Jesus, with the Word of God, with the Truth of Life ... that when the counterfeit that is offered to us it would be easily seen and known for what it is. And rejected by us!
O Lord! Teach us your ways in this.
The purpose for the book of Proverbs - clearly stated in verses 2 - 6 ... ~ "for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young - let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance - for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise."
Praying that I will learn Proverbs. Not just memorize the words - but LEARN to LIVE Proverbs!!!
Proverbs has 31 chapters but is infinite is wisdom and counsel. I have read it many times ... and always find something "new", something that applies to today. Several of my "life verses" are found within these chapters.
All of the Bible is God's instruction manual for this life ... but Proverbs seems to me to be the "center" of it all.
I thought I would take a verse or verses, or maybe even a chapter, at a time - and share what God has spoken to me about it. How God has used it in my life.
Hopefully, others will find this as an encouragement to read Proverbs, study them, and allow the timeless truths to seep in and change their lives as well.
