Daniel Boone's Last Home in Kentucky

Daniel Boone's Cabin in Nicholas County, Kentucky.
The cabin was originally built in 1795.

It was sacred ground to be standing there, touching the wood that he touched.
To see into the past, thinking of his time there, the coffee he drank, the food he cooked, the misty mornings that he stood at the window.
The ghost-bumps were real in my heart, and on my arms.
It was an honor.

At one time Daniel Boone owned 100,000 acres in Nicholas County, KY. He was not the best at details or paperwork, so sadly lost ownership of the land when Kentucky moved to the new system of taxes & record deeds.
In the spring of 1795, Daniel Boone & his wife returned from Virginia, and the cabin was built. He, his wife & 10 children lived in the cabin until 1799 when they moved to Missouri. It is told that they bored out an oak tree and floated down the river to Missouri (Louisiana Territory).
Daniel Boone’s cabin now stands on private property on Hwy 68, 3 miles from the traffic island on Hwys 68 & 36. A gravel road close to the historic marker sign leads to the cabin.

Dear Margaret,
My wife & I spent over a week in September, 2014 in Kentucky, following in the "footsteps" of Daniel Boone & his family. We stayed at a motel just N.E. of Lexington for two nights & I casually mentioned I'd laid out an itinerary to cover all the major historical points of interest involving the Boone's. The clerk on duty told me about this cabin on the property of a wealthy auctioneer that was built by Daniel. I was a little skeptical, but called the gentleman's phone number she gave me. He was very friendly &courteous. After telling him what we were up to, he graciously gave us directions & permission to visit the cabin. I am now seventy years of age & Daniel has been one of my heroes since I was a little farm boy exploring the woods around our farm. Visiting the only remaining structure he built with his own hands was the highlight of our trip! It was if you could still feel his presence at the sight. He chose a very logical location to build in close proximity to a spring & small stream, but in a shallow vale to protect from winter winds. I entered the cabin & was amazed by how small it is. Hard to imagine them & their ten children having enough room to sleep, let alone live in there for four years! Thank you for sharing this website, one idea to share with you, we finished our journey in Frankfort at the final resting place for Daniel & his wife when they were brought back to Kentucky. It is a beautiful location, with a magnificent view of the Kentucky river & the capitol building. Visit their grave & the capital building, for it's elegance & murals, if you haven't yet. You'll love the experience! One wonders if Daniel might not have stood in that very spot, enjoying the view, while exploring the country!

Sincerely,

Randy Cunningham

    Disconnect & Unplug

I stepped outside one morning lately, took about 15 minutes to simply disconnect and unplug from all things. Listen. Look. I heard about 12 different birds singing, saw many interesting bugs crawling on the ground, watched the sun climb upwards thru the leaves of the trees, felt the lightest whisper of a breeze, saw at least 3 brilliant red cardinals, about 4 golden finches, and the largest butterfly I have seen in ages.
It caused my heart to make a decision. To strive to live disconnected and unplugged - even if I am not. At least to be alert and aware of all that is not "connected and plugged". There is so much more to life than computers, cell phones and TV. Time to get back to the basics of LIVING.
